porn sites?

My daughter was telling me aboiut how porn sites are only two clicks away if you are on line (due to ads) and i wondered if any children had ever clicked by mistake and there it is.... would be a truly horrendous situ if this happened and then was reported back to parents. Apparently its hard to totally safguard your computer aginst these sites as more are springing up...any one had this problem?

I've not had a problem with porn (thank god) but my DS who is 4 is very computer literate and he decided in his wisdom that he liked to use 'bing' instead of google as its easier to spell.... so he's on bing the other day and had been looking at tiny pop dance clips when I looked over and saw him watching a trailer for a horror film!!! thankfully I got there before he saw anything too bad but I have banned him from bing now as google is so much easier to control. He's a funny little thing but I 100% can trust him not to use bing in the future - the other day I put his dessert down in front of him and he carried on eating all his main course for about 20 mins before saying 'finally that cheesecake has been driving me mad in front of me'!!! (i thought he'd had enough dinner so gave him his pudding without taking his first plate away!!)

I did think about this the other day and wonder how long it would be before he stumbled across porn, so I have told him he can only use proper websites when he's playing with the other children and can explore on his own in the evening (on his own as in in front of me in the living room but the freedom to use the laptop as he sees fit.)

When i was at university I did a powerpoint presentation of genetic manipulation of tomatoes. One of the tomatoes I was talking about is called moneymaker. I needed an image of a tomato so put the words moneymaker and tomato into google and got a porn site which was beyond disgusting and I clicked off it pretty quickly but was horrified to think that would be on my computer.

My DS who was 6 at the time and wanted a new bike typed in toys r us . Com instead of .co . Uk and got adults toys!!!!! He was shouting that's not a bike and getting cross at the computer totally unaware if what it was he was looking at. Lol

There are ways to completely restrict internet access to one or two sites, I am quizzing my husband about it tonight - he's a mac engineer which helps!

those are the reasons why i dont have a computer for my setting im only just getting the hang of it myself and its scary what you can get on here,although the kids probably know lots more than me about computing!

I once typed in "firemen in uniform" when I was looking for pictures for our "people who help us" theme.

I tell you what...they didn't have much uniform on & I don't believe many of them were real firemen

Seriously though, it is a concern when children are using the internet. I'm sure you can get computer programs that block things like that.

I dont know much about computers but I used to have nannynet on mine when my dc's where little.

That worked too well actually as I was looking for a pedigree dog breeder and everytime I tried to google it, it would flash up
NO ACCESS !!

I dont let minded children go on my computer, if they break it it's not insured and I dont have hundreds of pounds to replace it.

I don't let the mindees use my laptop either. My hubby always buys high spec machines and I wouldn't want to be telling him it was damaged I'm sure they all have access at home anyway!

my DS has his own laptop which he uses with mindee - mindee doesn't really touch though as she's too little. i have let afterschoolers on my laptop too but tbh they couldn't do much damage sitting in front of me at the table.

There are lots of ways you can ensure children are secure online including software which stops them accessing sites you would rather they did not see.

We use - http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ - it's a bit annoying to start with as you have to ok all the sites they are allowed to visit but once it's set up it runs in the background.

I've used it with teenagers and it stops them going anywhere they shouldn't as well... it barks and shuts down if they try too many times.

You can change your settings in Google to use safe search, this restricts what sites come up when you search.

No I don't let mine use it either. Even the full time ones or the older after school ones. I feel it is something their parents can do with them and they use them at Pre-School and School now from day one. I'm not that Computer savy and I don't feel compelled to do everything with the children. Have to leave something for the parents!

what you need ladies is nannynet you down load it and then you type in all words you think are inappropriate but also put bum, hardcore, lesbian, gay, underage, ann summers, sex ect the innocent words and it majorly restricts it. x its annoying though when your on trade-it looking for hardcore (for the garden) and it says 'you have tried to access a restriced website.....'

Gosh don't you have any parental controls on it? They are really very good. Usually get options with the anti virus software to not allow certain sites etc. Mind you I wouldn't let them on on their own... But my eldest is only almost 6. I do have an old pc which is small and I have it alongside the DVD player and it plugs in to the TV as the monitor for the children. My husband is a computer engineer so may do something else to stop it etc but I have never had anything.

I use Norton internet security/anti virus/firewall and parental control with all our computers (we have 3 as hubbie is pretty obsessed..lol) as my 12yr old and 9yr old are always on the laptop. Hubbie works with computers and used to work in internet security and has set it all up.

There are different levels of security for each user so I can set it for each child. It seems to be pretty good at blocking any sites to do with porn,gambling,social network sites (Ive allowed facebook) weapons, and various other things I dont want my kids looking at.

Mindees dont go on the Laptop as its fairly new and to tell you the truth it cost a lot of money and I dont want it getting sticky and broken

We use Microsoft live family safety. Its completley free & blocks ALL pop ups. If your using the pc yourself & want to see the content you can just insert your password.
