Safety gate on awkward stairs

Just looking for any advice or ideas. I know i'm going to need a stairgate at the bottom of my stairs and to be honest i'd want one (they are rather steep) but my problem is that there is a banister that goes all the way down and i cannot see how i can fit a gate on it...anyone have similar stairs or any ideas how i can get round this without cutting the end of the banister off (its a rented property)?

I had to have mine made as the bottom banister rail is round and standard gates could not be secured. Its been on for 10 years now and I just hook it open when I'm not working.

Look for a 'baby dan' product that has about 3 panels and can be fixed to the wall, I cannot think what its called right now but we have one and its fab and brill for hard to fit places xx

Have you looked at the one thats retractable it comes with different attachments including one that straps round a bannister.

I've just noticed i've put banister instead of handrail

Have included a pic now...have a feeling the hubby may need to get creative

We have this one cos we have the same issue, as well as a bizarre bottom step. It does not have to be fitted in the same way as a standard gate, as in a straight line. So you could put the cassette on the door frame rather than the side of the stairs, so the handrail is not an issue at all, then close the gate across to the other side of the stairs. It is a pricey stair gate, but I actually find I prefer it because it rolls away when not in use rather than being permanently fixed and in the way. It folds up small and totally out of the way so you can forget it's there at weekends and evenings. I think it would definitely work on your stairs.
The alternative is get your hubby to attach a strip of 2x2 under the handrail to extend your wall out to the same level as your handrail and attach the gate to that - we've done that before too, but it can be a problem if the plaster is not great quality or if you have to remove it when you move out.

I've got this one at the top of my stairs. It works really well and is out of the way when the children are not here.

I use the one above it so worth the money - i bought mine from boots about 4 years ago - theres no bar going across the bottom and you wouldn't now you had a stair gate outside of childminding.

I should probably tell you that mine actually broke, the spring inside it pinged off somehow. I phoned customer services and they were great. They sent me a new gate, I had it within 3 days of phoning.

With the new gate parents aren't allowed to open and close it because they find it really difficult and I think that their insane pulling is what broke the first one.
