Hello – this was one of my favourite meals as a child and in turn my children (and my mindees) wolf it down every time! We call it Hunters Pie – don’t know if that’s it’s real name but hey …

Ingredients (enough for 4-6 depending on their appetites):

  • One packet of sausagemeat or 10-14 sausages (depending on their size)
  • One tin of chopped tomatoes
  • One onion very finely chopped
  • 2 heaped tsp of instant gravy granules
  • Enough potatoes to mash and cover the top
  • Some grated cheese (optional)

Method:

Peel and cut up the potatoes and put them on to boil. Spread the sausagemeat out in the bottom of an oven proof dish (lasagne dish is ideal). Put it in the oven at Gas Mark 5 for about 25 mins or until just starting to brown. Once cooked drain off the fat (there’s often quite a lot of it) then cut the sausagemeat up into bitesize pieces and return to the lasagne dish. If you’re using sausages instead, cook them under the grill then cut up into bitesize pieces and put into the bottom of a lasagne dish. In a jug make up the gravy granules with only about ¼ pint of boiling water so that it’s quite thick. Now add the tinned tomatoes to the jug and mix together to create a meaty tomato sauce. Now stir in the onion too. If your children are fussy about ‘bits’ you can now blitz this to make a smooth sauce. Now pour the sauce over the sausage making sure it’s all covered and evenly spread over the bottom of the dish. Now mash the potatoes and spread over the top of the meat/tomato layer and sprinkle the grated cheese on top. Return to a Gas Mark 5 oven for about 25 mins or so till the potato starts to brown. Serve with plenty of veg.
