Orange Experiment

Did you know that different parts of the same fruit can taste different?

You will need:

  • 1 navel orange

What you do:

Peel the orange and cut one slice across the stem end and then one from the bottom (blossom) end.

Get the children to taste each piece.

They should find that the slice from the bottom end is sweeter.

This is because the bottom end would have had the blossom flowers and the blossom end develops more sugar as it is exposed to the sun more.

This means that fruit grown in hotter countries is sweeter.

Try experiments on other fruits to see if it is true.
