Memory game
- You will need:A tray or the lid of a large box
- A tea towel or a piece of material
- Selection of toys and objects
Choose 4 or 5 items, put them onto the tray and cover them with a tea towel or piece of material. Make sure that your child is not able to see you preparing the tray!
When the tray is ready lift up the tea towel for 10 - 20 seconds and ask your child to look at all the items and try to remember them. Cover them up again and see if your child can remember all the items. How many can they remember?
If they find this easy try it with more items, or give them less time with the tray uncovered. Likewise, if they find this too difficult, reduce the number of items on the tray or increase the time.
Another way to play this game is to find something which begins with each of the letters in the word 'Tweenies', 'Teletubby, or any other Littlekids character. When your child is trying to remember the items from the Tweenies or Littlekids tray, remind them of the letters each item begins with. For example, "Something beginning with the letter t". (It is helpful to use the sound the letter makes at the start of a word rather than the letter name).
You could do the same thing using the letters in your child's name.
Ask your child to put a tray together for you to have a go at testing your memory too!
Learning Goals-Concentration skills
Sight memory, which is a valuable pre reading skill
When you think about items beginning with a specific letter, your child will begin to learn or reinforce their knowledge of letter sounds.
