Is it...
"It is very important to Fred and I."
Or
"It is very important to me and Fred."
Am I correct in thinking it is the latter, I was always told to take anyway the name of the other person and the sentence should still make sense...

Yes, it is the latter and the way you can work it out is how you said. Hpwever I was also taught to say Fred and me not me and Fred. Hx
I was taught it depends on if the me/I is the subject or object of the sentence.
So in this case you and Fred are the subjects and so it should be I.
I am happy to be proved wrong by the way - its just the way I have always done it. This is handy too ..http://www.elearnenglishlanguage.com...lties/ime.html
i would have said the correct way is 'Fred and I' ..dad was a printer and i grew up with always having my grammer corrected
but i could be wrong as 'me and fred' sounds fine!
The reason I am asking is because a parent is pulling up on a childs grammar and vocab etc and towards the end of this witten "issue" the sentence read "Fred and I" (different name) just made me smile. Really tempted to correct her when she collects and say.. "You mean Fred and me, not Fred and I." lol just being silly really, not actually annoyed about anything, it was just a thought lol
Perhaps I am just better off keep schtum
I would keep quiet on this one The phrase, pick your battles springs to mind (not in a bad way btw, just know from personal experience that if you mention it, even light-heartedly, things can get waaaaay out of hand very quickly)
My stepfather once queued up for a good 20 minutes, in a shop where he wasn't buying anything, just so he could point out the spelling mistakes and incorrect grammar on the chalk board outside the shop, my mum was sooo embarrassed
How funny! I used to work for T-Mobile and we changed over our POS boards and about 2 weeks later we had some stickers to cover a tiny part of this MASSIVE board...some random customer noticed that the people in this advert who were sat playing cards were actually playing with cards that had a nudey lady on it... seriously though, you would have had to look REALLY REALLY hard to notice it lol... A customer made a huge complaint about it!
I would of said Fred and I but I don't know if it's right or wrong.
Toothfairy
Definately Fred and I in the context they are using it
"it is important to Fred and me"
"It" is the subject "Fred and I/me" are the objects
you do not say it is important to I..........you say it is important to me
latin GCE has subject and object drummed into me
http://languageandgrammar.com/2008/1...or-him-and-me/
I was always taught that you say it as you would if it was just you i.e. if Fred wasn't there you'd say "it is very important to ME" and if you are talking about somebody else as well you always put them first. So you end up with "it is very important to Fred and me".
If you had said "I thought it was very important" then that would change to "Fred and I thought it was very important".
I would have said Fred and I too.
My mum was always on my back about spelling and grammar, lol
I'm in the Fred and I camp too.
Fred and me just doesn't sound right to me
Miffy xx
Keep smiling!
I was taught that you can use "Fred and I" or "me and Fred" but that you shouldn't use "Fred and me". I can't remember the reasons why though.
Correct version is Fred and me.
explan ation copied from web:
All you have to do is leave out the second object. Look over these examples, and you’ll see it’s really simple.
You might be tempted to say:
WRONG: “Would you explain that to John and I?”
But then, when you omit the other object, you’ll have:
WRONG: “Would you explain that to I?”
Now that just sounds silly. Try this:
RIGHT: “Would you explain that to John and me?”
RIGHT: “Would you explain that to me?”
Now practice with these:
WRONG: Leave the decision to Laura and I.
RIGHT: Leave the decision to me.
RIGHT: Leave the decision to Laura and me.
WRONG: Please join Glenna and I for lunch.
RIGHT: Please join me for lunch.
RIGHT: Please join Glenna and me for lunch.
WRONG: It’s just between you and I.
RIGHT: It’s just between you and me.
WRONG: The group consists of Laura, Joe, and I.
RIGHT: The group consists of Laura, Joe, and me.
