Default anyone got an Andriod tablet thingy?

I don't mean a phone but i'm guessing its a bit like an ipod touch??
I don't really understand this sort of gadget type thing but am thinking of getting one for my DS for yule this year - he'll be 5 in Feb but is highly computer literate and always on the net so thought this would be good for out and about.

So sort of asking, if you download the apps are they usable without wifi connection being present?
Apparently theres a difference between apps and games? Do you download the games and store them on your tablet as well, and would they take up much space, the one i'm looking at is 4gb although it can hold up t o 32gb in an external card.

any help would be much appreciated.
    thanks anna x
