    Unhappy Calling all chicken owners!

Hi there we have recently got some chickens, 3 lovely red hens who are a joy to look after but last night a dog got into the pen and has attacked one of our girls. She seems in a bad way and is not standing or baring weight on her leg. I have separated her and converted our old rabbit hutch into a little house that she can just stay quiet and all of her food and water can be close. She is eating and drinking and I am keeping a close eye on her but I don't know if there is any more I can do for her. I feel so bad seeing her in this state I'm just so annoyed the owner of the dog didn't even try to call their dog back and just stood watching while I struggled to get it out , not even an appology so I'm really upset over the situation and just want Betty to feel better! Luckily we have been able to patch up the coop but it must have taken some force to get in. If anyone has any advice it really would be much appreciated as we've only had them just over a week and are complete novices.

Doesnt sound good, a vet job i think if she is not putting any weight on it by tomorrow.(might be broken? then it might mean the end for her)
Can you make the pen more secure? thinking foxes as well as dogs.
keep her separated from other hens plenty of tlc and see how she is tomorrow.

Oh Flora is the one on here to chat about chickens

i've been around lots of chickens and any that was in a bad way would be killed, but yours are more like pets so you'll have to try what you can. If its suffering though that may be the kindest thing. Sorry! have you got the chicken coop in a pen too? or do they roam free?

Yes that's right we don't want her in pain and feeling miserable but we want to give her a chance if you know what I mean. She seems pretty content at the moment other than not being able to use the leg she is eating and drinking and hobbled out to have a peck around with her sisters earlier today and just sat watching them. They have a coop with a pen attached so roam around in there and that is where the dog got in. Me and my dad have done our best to animal proof it more though to fingers crossed there will be no more visitors. But thank you for all of your help and advise we are going to see how she gets on over the next few days, fingers crossed she'll be able to make a full recovery!

Oh dear I hope the poor little thing comes good. If the dog was on your property then I would charge the owner for any damage to the pen and hen and any vet fees. Dogs by law are supposed to be on leads.
