Sewing Machines
Not childminding related, but I know we have some keen sewers on here.
DD, 7, is desperate for a sewing machine - obviously it would have to be a Christmas/birthday present. I know they do kiddy ones, but are they worth it, or should I be looking to get a simple adult version? Any recommendations?
How old were you/your children when you started experimenting on a sewing machine? I have only briefly used them when I was at secondary school in a couple of Art/Design lessons. It was so long ago that it would be the blind leading the blind, and so I would need a simple machine!
Out of interest, those of you with older mindees, would you let them use it - supervised of course?

My boys learn't to sew from about 8- though they often had a little go on the machine before- just lines.
DH's other life was a d&t teacher which included textiles and therefore sewing so the boys grew up on using electric tools for wood, metal, fabric and cooking from an early age.
I have a sewing machine and my 4 year old LO's press the pedals and join fabric together, but I guide as I am concerned about the foot and their little fingers. I make things and they help by pressing the pedal or the reverse and forward button.
I would definately go for a real one, one that you can alter the speed on, so that you can slow it down.
My friend had a push button one that I had not seen before, but one thing you need to take into account is being able to reach the pedal.
We have an old hand singer one that the boys used to love using, easy to control but harder work spinning the handle and pushing the fabrics through.
She could make things that involve long lines of sewing - bed covers for her dolls, cushion covers, little curtains for a puppet theatre.
You can learn together!

My daughter had one of these when she was about 9. It's basic, but easy to use. It's a good starter machine, but won't tackle heavy fabrics.
