Do you mean for your pre-registration visit? (rather than 'inspection'- which is up to 30 mths after registration)
It has been recently said that it is good to be 'ready to work' at Pre-reg.
But some CMers work without stairgates. I do not have a thermometer. Some work without travel cots. I do not have cupboard locks.
You can have a list of what you plan to buy- in your RA you can list what you will need depending in the age groups you want to mind. So, it is a balnce you need to find that suits your situation.
I have not heard of anyone not being approved for registration, as so much is pre-approved now!
If you are planning to start work quite soon it might be a good idea to start gathering things like a fire blanket etc.
I get all my resources from charity shops, generally, and freecycle. Craft bits are recycled- collect old greetings cards, tin foil, sweet wrappers, paper, kitchen roll tubes- you can quicky get a no-cost craft box for collage and junkmodlling. If you decide to get a few bits and pieces ready you do not need to spend much money.
Good luck with your pre-reg.

I agree with everything moggy has said as I also don't have a monitor, stair gate, cupboard locks etc. I would say that you should be ready to explain to Ofsted your reasons for not having these things if they ask and if you have already though of or written your risk assessments for the different rooms you will be using your resons will be there. Ofsted will want to see that you have thought of potential hazards and risk assessed all situations that are relevant to the children you will be minding. That is why it is good practice to continually risk assess as one month you may have 2 three year olds then a 9 mth old will start and some things may have to change to meet everyone's needs.
Having a list of resources you want/going to purchase is a very good idea. You would show this to Ofsted and explain why you thing you need the items on the list and this would show you are aware of meeting the needs of different aged children. I have continuous wish list.

Until you have children lined up you really don't know what you will need. You may have an immobile 3 year old and need specialist equipment which won't be much use if you have set up stair gates and large outdoor play equipment. You really just need to be able to talk the talk at pre reg.
