* P A S S E D* today
Well I'm a completely frazzled wreck, 3.5 hours of intensity!!!!
Reading feedback on reg visits has been invaluable here and I want to do the same but my mind is half gone! It is amazing how different the inspectors can be, mine sat here with her computer typing everything I said. She started at the back of the pre reg booklet and went through, there were a few questions that weren't on there like what toys will you have and for what ages....things like that. Got completely stuck when she asked me what would I do to support a family that didn't speak English with a very young child, err I said print off some info in their language? Have own language books and music for the child? Label things with translations. Offer simple information to parents? She wasn't happy and holding out for something else and kept repeating 'what would you do' until finally I said, try and offer them support. It turned out the answer was to encourage parents to learn English!! She suggested taking them along on activities or picking up local English course info and giving it to them.
Also, another thing that stumped me was that she would NOT let me read any of the policies. You have to know your policies and I struggled a bit on a few of the points. I gave her a written document for answer to question 1 on the pre reg booklet and she liked that as it was 8 pages long!! She said she would have accepted a lot less. Main ones Safeguarding, lost child, medication, er can't remember the others right now, oh yes and Behaviour.
She told me she gets very annoyed with LA advisors who instruct childminders to contact them for issues to do with safeguarding or complaints and said that those procedures need to be crystal clear for each childminder without the need of the LA's as what would happen if they were unavailable? She said it has caused some to be give 'inadequate' as when they had a concern they didnt follow the correct procedure.
She definitely wasn't a childminder and even told me that. She was an inspector for another area and then her company took over Ofsted.
She said she knew when she saw my answers to qquestion 1 that I would be good and passed me and said I was great/
SO GLAD IT'S OVER!!!!

Sorry to frighten you darling...those were the WORST parts of today, as she was actually very friendly and frequently went off on tangents about her life and family, laughing and telling me stories. I guess I was naive to think I could just read off the policies which I had just tweaked and adapted templates, so that was a bit scary but my brain managed to coordinate with my mouth in babbling on about anything and everything I could remember!
Don't worry....honestly, just know what to do in the case of lost child, injury, fire, safeguarding etc. They want you to know the legislation so safeguarding and complaints aren't to do with Early years at all.
Oh yes, that's another thing. She wanted to imagine she had just made a complaint against me what exactly would I do? Without looking at my policy but I managed to remember.
I know it's daunting but this is the last hurdle and you've got this far and been trained so you'll be fine. Will be looking forward to an update from you tomorrow!!

Well done, it sounds like she was very thorough!
I can understand that you need to know your policies, but we write a lot of them so we can refer back when we need to.
Also, I'm really not sure that its our place to find English classes for parents, or take them out with us on activities. If parents ask for help or advice, then fair enough, but surely we are not responsible for the adults as well.

I completely agree with you, I went along with it but I cant imagine myself saying to a parent 'oh by the way I picked up this prospectus for you to look in to improving your English for the sake of your child's development' errr don't think so!.......
She seemed to have a bee in her bonnet about this, but said it was a question more directed at nurseries than childminders but it was painful trying to gauge what she was getting at!
