Outdoor play for crawler

I have a baby starting next week who crawls. We usually play alot in the garden, but i am not sure how to bring the baby out without restricting him to a pushchair or sling. My own children used to crawl around on the grass and I would keep a close eye if they would put anything in their mouth, but not sure if that is acceptable when childminding. Would be interested to hear how others provide outdoor play for crawlers.

Hi there. I had this issue yesterday with one of my little ones. It was lovely and sunny so we went out to see what she would do! My garden is fairly small and is all pebbles, and I wasn't sure what she would make of it. She crawled on the stones as if it were a lush lawn, and wasn't at all bothered! Thankfully she's not one to put everything in her mouth, I've had one who constantly tried to eat the stones! The only thing to do is try it and see. You could put a big blanket down and see if she ventures off it to explore. Some children don't like the feel of grass!

I tend to put a mat down with toys on & start the child off on their. If they want to leave the mat & explore, I let them & just watch what they are picking up etc.
My biggest problem is having a muddy lawn, so I put them in waterproof trousers to protect their clothes.

I put a waterproof suit on mine too. then just watch them, at first they may be a bit hesitant but generally there's no stopping them once they feel safe.

My garden is too muddy too, but am bidding on some all in one waterproofs on ebay (in various sizes from 6 months to about 4 years)

regatta do baby waterproofs (not padded) and togz do these overbootee things for crawlers - you pop them over their cruising shoes so they don't get muddy.

waterproofworld.co.uk sell both, the bootees are £8 but well worth it
