Default what would you do in an emergency?

I was in the park with all my mindees yesterday when a dog attacked a woman (she was not with me). I shut my children in the basketball courts and called the police. I told the parents and all was fine (with us, poor lady wasn't too good) Anyway this led to a mum asking me this morning, if I was out and something happened to one of my mindees and I had to call an ambulance, what would I do with all the children. To be honest I wasn't sure what to say, as I quite often have 6-8 children during the school holidays. What would any of you do if such a circumstance arose? I wouldn't like a child to be alone in an ambulance, but I couldn't take them all in with me. It's made me think.

What does it say on your emergency procedure ? Or your outings risk assessment ?

On mine it says I will not be able to go with the child in an ambulance due to a duty of care to the other children.
Parents have to sign this to make sure they are aware of this.

Quick thinking on your part re the basketball courts - so well done.

My emergency statement reads more or less like Twinks.
It says that I may not be able to accompany a child to hospital/in an ambulance if I have other children with me, although I would make every effort to get to the hospital/emergency treatment to be with the child where possible. This may mean I have to call in emergency back up care - either leaving the children with another minder or suitable adult. Parents would be called and advised at the earliest opportunity.
again parents have to sign to say they understand this.

follow behind in the car or leave the mindees with the minder or freind i am with and go with the child, depends if i am with somone and if i had a car,, if its only a couple of other children the ambulance driver would take them with you,,
once the abulance had arrived i would call the parents and explain and tell them which hospital to go to then the parent would probalby get to the hospital pretty quickly anyway. obvioulsy i would still get to the hospital somhow.

This is a hard one and something I haven't given any thought. In this situation..... can you leave mindees with a suitable adult? ie not a childminder? but a friend who you trust 100%? I would be torn I would want to go with the mindee in the ambulance. Any more advice on this?

A friend of mine left the children with a Police man who decided because one was in tears, to bring them all to the hospital in the car with sirens on, children thought it was a BRILLIANT experience. Police man was just so pleased the child stopped crying!!!! Don't know why she called police as well, never really thought about it til now, as accident just happened to be an accidental slip on a climbing frame at the park. Good one to think about, so glad I work with an assistant. x

It was awful. Well a few weeks ago one of my mindees was jumped on by a huge german shepherd in the park. It never bit, but it jumped on her back and she was bleeding and shaking. Anyway I thought it wouldnt happen twice so the other day we went back to the park. I saw a fella sauntering towards us, white shell suit, a cocky swagger and a huge staffy dog with a huge gold harness on, and off the lead too. I had a bad feeling since the previous episode. So I went in the basketball courts while he went past. Then I heard the screams. There was and elderly lady , another lady (her daughter I think) and grand daughter about 12. They had a labrador puppy and the staffy got hold of it and was ragging it. The young girl tried to grab her pup and there was a lot of blood. The man was kicking his dog in the ribs. It was terrifying. So I called the police. Thankfully the ladies and the pup were fine but there was a lot of blood. But to make matters worse as they were leaving the park, the german shepherd who'd jumped on one of my mindees previously walked into the park as they were leaving and jumped on them. Poor people. So back to the basketball courts with my mindees and I managed to flag down the same police car. What a horrible day. I love dogs but the owners need putting down!

OMG how awful. I love dogs and have always had dogs but I would have been terrified especially if I had children with me. Sounds like you reacted brilliantly

It is such a shame that these ignorant are allowed to have dogs Staffs have such a bad press but they are actually soft soppy lovely dogs with a fantastic outlook on life, always seeing the bright side of everything with smiley faces. Its not the dogs, its the people who own them. I have had a staff and miss him so much - had to be put to sleep at 13 - and would have another in a heartbeat, but dont simply because the parents might not like it as they dont understand. If you read any report about dog attacks involving a staff its always because the people that own them dont care for them properly, dont know how to train/socialise a dog, let them off the lead when they should never be and should never have them in the first place.
Mine loved all kids,in fact loved everyone, but DID have a bit of a problem with other dogs apart from our own 2 or puppies, which he loved, easy solution he NEVER went off the lead

The more people I meet the more I love my dog

That's awful! Those poor people, and you and your mindees for having to see it all happen. I think you should give yourself a huge pat on the back for reacting the way you did.

    This is so true.

I was with my friend, my mindee and my friend's chihahua and a dog (rhodesian ridgeback, which was not on the lead, went for my friend's dog, she pulled her dog up in her arms by it's lead and the other dog started jumping all over her, scratching her face.

I felt so powerless and could do nothing as I had my mindee with me and was backing away from the dog with her.

There were two people with the dog a man and woman, the man just stood there and the woman was trying to get the dog off my friend.

Two people who patrol the park came over and said that they had told them no less than 5 minutes ago to put the dog on a lead as dogs are not allowed off the lead in this park of the park because it was near the lake and children's play area. There is a larger area further up the road for dogs to be walked.

Some people should not be allowed to have dogs
