Default british sign language for children

    Hi

Does anyone know of a good website or a book to get to learn the Basics of British sign laguage for young children. As i've been offered a weekend job working with deaf children in the summer, children are from 3 up. Would be a good help to me.

    John.

I'd start with the NDCS website.

The Let's Sign books are excellent too.

    Hi John,

I agree with the above, the Let's Sign resources are ideal. I'd recommend any of the three books at the bottom of this link:

http://www.chelltune.co.uk/lets-sign-m-13.html My daughter is shouting for a feed but I will have a flick through these books later and see which has the most info about BSL in general as well as just the actual signs.

The LET’S SIGN Series uses British Sign Language. Their publications are designed to support people learning BSL with good quality and up-to-date materials for all ages and abilities - in the field of deafness, special needs and for signing with hearing babies and children.

Do the children all sign? I've not worked with Deaf children as young as three but older children can usually lip read too.

There are some Deaf awareness tips on this page which might be helpful.

I also found this very helpful, as it's something I'm really interested in learning. I used to follow Mr Tumble (not literally) when my son was a baby and he used to sign basic 'please', 'thank you' etc. I'd love to be able to sign properly and have printed/laminated the British Finger Spelling Alphabet from the equal opp shop, plus the free posters referred to above, which are BRILLIANT I'm off to look at the various websites now. Thanks everyone!

The person how sends the poster will have to go back to basics to learn to send files lol. Do you know anything about the online cause you can do at: http://www.british-sign.co.uk/index.php

Yes thank's i'm ok just done my SEF form online, telling OFSTED i have a mouth and like to use it when i talk to people lol (not realy) But did get an email from them saying childminders don't have to do a SEF form but you must tell them on your visit all about your setting.

Now i'm off to do a bit off fishing with some mates, get some cod.

Thanks for the order John. The Animal Signs book is one that is recommended by Scope's In the Picture campaign as it features images of children with disabilities.

www.chelltune.co.uk/other-books-c-66.html (info at the top of the page). Many of the Child's Play books on the site have images of children who have gearing aids, leg splints, wheelchairs, glasses, etc.
