    Default Music licence

Today in the post I received a letter about needing a music licence because the mindees might listen to music ie nursery rhymes or watch the tv whilst in my care, do we need this? Has anyone else received one? Or is it another con to take money from us?

Strictly speaking, a licence is required if we use music/radio/TV to entertain a child or help them settle to sleep, etc.

A licence is not required if the music is on for the enjoyment of anyone who lives in the house, and the children who hear it are incidental to the playing of the music. Purpose and intent can be very difficult to prove.

So the answer is that all CMs love nursery rhymes, and the children are merely 'listening in' to our preferred art form (whilst sulking over our refusal to let them play the thrash metal CDs they brought along. )

I think the performing rights people are quite realistic about enforcement. After all, if you play your car stereo with the window wound down, you are essentially broadcasting a public performance.

a while back we had this discussion. I am prettty sure (Sarah remind me ) Sarah got an official wording from PPL sayign that childminders are pretty much exempt. Sure it will be in the downloads somewhere or a post search maybe.

if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got

No we do not need a licence - it's clarified here -

If you have any problems I still have the original emails from PPL and a good contact there
