Checking sleeping babies
Might be going mad but I'm convinced I read somewhere that sleeping babies should checked every 10 mins and I changed policy to match. Are there guidelines on this and if so until what age? Thanks

I have heard something like that. Only prob is 1wakes at the drop of a hat.

Really I haven't heard this?! I obviously check on them but I'd wake one if them if I was in and out so often! What age is this up to?
-
There are no guidelines I am aware of - unless an Ofsted inspector or local bod has made a comment and someone has taken it as a requirement.
There certainly isn't anything in the EYFS about it.

A lot of daycares do this as standard and record the times on a log sheet. I do it out of habit.

So long as there is a monitor in the room I use that to check on children if they are upstairs and babies. Once they are about 2 I know their routines and how long they are likely to sleep.
I do check on babies regularly if they are in a push chair asleep in a downstairs room.
I remember seeing something about checking every 15 mins but if I opened a door they would soon be awake!!
I'm not paranoid - the world IS out to get me!

I read in the book PACEY (ncma then) provided me when I done my course that its every 10 minutes. What a load of rubbish. For me it's the baby monitor and checking every time I'm up which is normally every 15-20. Even then it's a quick peek around the door I don't go right over and prod them to make sure their asleep! Can you imagine what it would be like! Some things are pure common sense if I got in trouble for not checking every 10 minutes I would just offer places to children who don't sleep because its bonkers.

Daftbat I did have 15 mins on my policy originally and then read 10. I log it on a sheet but its a bit tiresome tbh!!! Sarah I've checked eyfs also and no mention in there. I'm going to check the SIDS site later as I need to know! Baby is one this week and risk drops dramatically so want to review. Thanks for your replies

My baby is 1 this week too. Coincidence

As in not MY baby but a baby I mind. Been one of those days.

At my last First Aid training we were told sleeping babies should be checked every 10 minutes. Its because its something to do with brain damage occuring after 10 mins due to back of oxygen.

oh dear , I dont check them at all , although they are all over one , well actually over 2 now
I live in a small house and always hear them when they wake , so i dont use baby monitors either
-
I use seperate monitors.....I never physically check them as they wake.....ofsted inspector was happy with this.

Surely this only applies to very young babies? I think if I were to be looking after a newborn I would consider checking this frequently but not for an older baby. I would also ask the parents about it - what they did, whether there were any medical reasons to check this frequently. With very light sleepers, they'd wake and not get enough sleep.
