Advice please - Hives?

Hi,

This evening my daughter has come out in a rash, it looks like hives! I have spoken to the doctors and they think she has had an allergic reaction so I have covered her in calomine lotion and giving her piriton to take as they said. I am hoping she will be fine tomorrow but what do I do if it spreads? Should I allow children to still come here even though its not contagious? Even though I don't know for definite. Help please!!

Hives are not contagious so you will be fine minding as long as your daughter is up to the noise.

Think about what she has eaten differently or worn today - sometimes they can come up for no apparent reason and other times they are specific to, for example, eating tomatoes or a new soap.

They generally go down as quickly as they came up though they can last a few days but apart from feeling groggy from the Piriton she should be ok.

If she gets any worse or her breathing is affected DO NOT hang around waiting to see if it improves - get advice FAST.

My daughter used to suffer from hives, from the age of about 2 through to 4/5 years old. She was referred to a specialist for allergy testing etc but all results came back normal. She was prescribed a very low does of antihistamine every day and if we forgot to give her a does she would come up in huge hives every day.

The specialist said hives were common in children ( I've never met another child who suffers though!) and they generally grow out of them but that they may reoccur when she is older if she gets stressed. He was right, she rarely gets them now and we stopped the medication a couple of years ago. She does tend to come up in hives if she is stressed, ie having a paddy!

The main thing I remember from the specialist is not to panic. Hives look awful but will often disappear as quickly as they arrive. They are not contagious.

Hope your daughter feels better and that they are just a one off.

dd had urticaria (sp?) when she was about 2/3, for about 4-5months every 2-3 days she would get hives over one part of her body - arm, leg, trunk, face, foot etc and after a few hours they would disappear! one of my mindees had it too, and for a while both mum and i thought they must be allergic to something in the grass in my garden, or their farm! however, dr said it was their bodies reaction to a virus !

who knows if they were really itchy, we gave antihistimine & used a calamine & aqueaus cream. but most of the time, they didn't seem to notice!

dr said it was common! not something i was aware of, or have come across since!

She has a cold so Ir think that me the reason she got the rash, it has gone this morning. She has never had Hives before and she is 8. However she has not gone to school today as he throat hurts and she has an ear ache.

I have informed my parents and they were still happy to send their children so she is now in bed watching Mirror Mirror DVD.

If she has a cold and earache I would say is a viral rash over an allergic rash

My DS had it a few weeks ago, came and went within two days.

All my children have had hives (uticaria) one quite severely and it went on for a week, they can come and go and come up in different places on the body, feels hot and uncomfortable. All grown out of it now - one came up with them straight after eating strawberries for the first time (can eat them now), one ate a hot cross bun and had them very badly, then a few years later ate chinese food with 5 spice seasoning in it so think it is a spice she may have an allergy too, but hasn't had anything for years, other one mildly and no idea what caused it but never came back again.
