how do you register to data protection? I have pictures and lj on an external drive do i still need it?

You go on the ICO website:
http://www.ico.gov.uk/
You can register online, and it's £35 per year. They send you a notification through the post. It's really easy, but makes sure you are covered for storing the info and pics on your computer
