Default how do you look for an assistant?

Hello, hopefully someone will be able to direct me in the right direction! I'm looking to hiring an assistant however i have no idea where to advertise or look? Local newspapers?
I've looked at the logistics of becoming employer or if they're self employed , but i'm not sure of how to get anyone interested? I don't have any family in the area, and close friends that i would consider work outside of the home and/or are self employed in other professions.

    HELP.
    thanks in advance

Our local college does apprenticeships and a lot of mums are doing their NVQs at the school - chatting at the school gate may get you someone? Thats where my assistant came from
