A friend and old colleague of mine has just posted a lovely photograph on FB. She lives in a block of flats, and typically there are several young school children also in the same block. She saved up lots of stuff from her recycling bin and old wrapping paper etc and set it up as an invitation to play/create on the landing outside her flat. She provided some glue, but that was the only expense. Before long she had a group of happy little children from different families creating away together! She left them to it, but being an EY specialist couldn't help but observe them for a little while. She said the teamwork, language skills and problem solving skills being practised and developed were amazing.
She has no children of her own, this was purely for other people's children. What a lovely, simple gesture don't you think? Happy memories being made and neighbourly bonds being strengthened! Just had to share! :)
