Help with paying when in nursery

Hi all I'm after some advice. I have a child that I look after for 2 days a week one day 10 hours and another 9 hours. They have been offered a flying start funded 2.5 hour nursery place. Now my question is should I be charging for my childminding as I will be taking and picking and still technically in my care during these times (on call) but if I did charge these times it takes away the point of 'funded childcare'. What about the added cost of petrol with the drop off and pick up also? Thanks in advance for all advice. X

Can you not offer this funded place to save all of the hassle? At the moment I don't have any children in my books who go to nursery, but I would also be reluctant to do the nursery run as its so disruptive to the day. If you decide it's something you want to do its your choice on how much to charge. Personally if I did do this I would charge my breakfast rate plus the hours after nursery.

Presumably mum's chief motivation for the nursery place is to cut her childcare bill and keep more of the money she earns. She probably won't get why she should pay you for the time you're not providing care. That's entirely reasonable.

OTOH, why should you provide the taxi service and structure your day around mum saving money, only for your income to fall as a result? That's equally reasonable.

Tbh I dislike playing 'gopher' for other settings unless the reason for it is at least 90% child-centred, not purely about saving mum some money. But even refusing to play cabbie for the child can make you the villain because you may be seen as snatching away the opportunity she's been given.

I think you need to talk this over with mum. Don't merely hammer home the rather lazy argument of "I can't fill the space" but stress the inconvenience and disrupt to your day and other mindees - she's probably not considered that side of things. Point out that you are still providing a service by being 'on call' throughout the nursery attendance. I'd also ask her straight what she thinks nursery has to offer that you don't.

I agree with above, and I wouldn't even mention the 'can't fill space' arguement ...

I have a mindee that I agreed to pick up from nursery at lunchtime one day a week ( long standing family, last term of nursery and nursery insist on at least 4 mornings a week for the last term - they spend quite a lot of time in the reception class ( and actually - I think it might have my decision to offer to pick up so LO would benefit! ) I don't drop off, I couldn't - as it isn't local to me (and I'm already dropping off at my school) , but picking up messes up my entire day! I can't really go anywhere, my other LOs need to have lunch very early before we go and/or be kept awake to eat at home or to go to bed ( as neither transfer from car to bed and then they don't sleep! ) its ok, as its only for this term and then NEVER again!
