I have just completed the webinar that Sarah posted about last week and would recommend it for anyone, old or new. It covers a lot, live people not a computer, and you can ask questions which they will answer to everyone.
It runs twice a month so have a look if you haven't done one yet

Definately well with logging into, not at all scary, and there are others available that look useful too.

I did this but tbh I wish i hadnt...they told me I have to be an employer to have my DD working for me if I pay her any money
this morning I have just spoke to someone at the employer helpline 03002003200 he said we HAVE TO REGISTER AS EMPLOYERS if the person we employ has another income..... as we need to take off the basic rate of tax before we give them any money...its classed as a second income for them and therefore liable to BR tax...... if they dont earn enough at the end of year to pay tax then we will get another reference number to enable us to issue a refund. I explained ny circumstances...my DD has her own business, is self employed and doesnt earn enough to pay tax but he said it makes no difference ...I have to be an employer as I pay her a wage
Id have thought if she had her own other business this made her self employed.
she is self employed ...this is what they are saying...because what I pay her is classed as a second income its liable for tax at basic rate...I have to pay that
But if she's self employed then she's still self employed surely. That makes no sense
thats what I thought but he told me it makes no difference....I pay her therefore I have to pay tax before I give it to her..at the basic rate and then its up to her at the end of tax year to claim any refund owing (from me!!)
I think everyone should just ring tax office themselves as each situation is different and then you can decide for yourself what you want to do x
