    Default Smoking Policy

I am just re-writing my smoking policy and basically no one in my home smokes at all and no one will EVER smoke in my home.

However I am aware that some parents smoke. I have read a couple of threads where packets of cigarettes and lighters have been left in childrens bag by mistake... Where do I stand on this?

I was going to say something along the lines of if a child comes to my setting with cigarettes or lighters left in their bag these will be thrown away, but after thinking about it... I am not sure if I am legally allowed to throw someone else property away.

If that is the case could I state that I will remove them from the bag and leave them outside and if they get ruined tough! I do not want ANY cigarettes in my home whatsoever

I don't keep any of the childrens bags anymore.

I was fed up with the clutter in my hall so I bought a small unit with 6 drawers in it which sits under my pegs. I keep changes of clothes in them and I have a bag of nappies for each child with their name on which I keep in a cupboard. I provide wipes, cream and nappy sacks.

It was the best decision I have ever made. So now no unexpected bits come into the house.

I don't have a No Smoking Policy because we have by law to work in a no smoking environment. If someone in your household smokes you have to tell all the parents and I would do a Risk Assessment which demonstrated that they did not smoke in the house or in front of the children.

I think leaving them outside and unattended is irresponsible as they could get into the wrong hands - I would say that they will be put into a safe place until they could be returned to their owner BUT I would stress to parents that I do not want to find them in children's bag and that they should check contents before leaving home - if I suspected a parent might leave them in a bag then I would be checking through bag before parent left
