You need to get visitors to sign in and out but not parents.
I waited until ofsted were due then asked for references from my parents. I have some really lovely letters in my file I was really touched to see what they thought of me

It's not actually statutory in the eyfs to have a visitors book although it is in the guidence as good practice. If you don't have one then you need to show/explain how you keep children safe around visitors or how you prevent unwanted visitors gaining access. I have a policy on visitors, I did have a book but to be honest sometimes I forgot to get it signed. Even my inspector forgot to sign it on the way out! Any other visitors ie gas check or electric check then I just jotted the time and name in my diary.

When I had my inspection in May, my inspector commented that she did not think a visitors book was necessary! I had always had one but she said for an individual minder with no one else working in the house, I did not need a visitors book - no doubt at the next inspection, they will be looking for the visitors book!!!

She did remark that if I wished to use one, the entries in it should definitely be made by me and not the visitor (not sure why??).

The visitor's book is like so many other things with Ofsted - some think it's good practice and some don't!

If you have one you don't need to get parents to sign and you can sign visitors in and out, they don't have to do it themselves.

I keep a record of any "visitors" to the house but do not get them to sign in and out. Hoping that will be ok with Ofsted?!

In my vb I just have people staying and then how long for and if they have contact with the children. i.e. parents that stay for more than drop off/collection, cleaner, friends, ofsted inspector he he

My feed back from the Ofsted inspector was that this was enough and for your feedback forms from the parents ask them to sign and date each one they complete.

I have a section on the bottom of my daily attendance register where I make a note of any visitors who came that day, their names, times in and out and purpose of visit.
