    Default Emergency paperwork

I have just had a very upset minder on the phone.

During her recent inspection the inspector looked at her emergency paperwork.

I am talking about the document we take out of the house and keep with us to allow us to request emergency medical help on behalf of a child.

Her document was headed 'Permission to request emergency medical help for a child'.

The inspector said it should say 'permission to request emergency medical advice and help for a child' and marked her inadequate for keeping children safe.

I have checked and this is what it says in the Eyfs so she has got it wrong... but I bet a lot of others have as well.

    Be warned!

Thanks Sarah - it seems a shame that the inspector had to be quite so harsh about it. I hope she did well in the rest....

I made ICE cards. I'll check them. Do I have to have a document as well?

Poor childminder, she must be in bits.

I know it's what the law says but inadequate sounds so dreadful!

Better get it sorted then, it's still on my list of things to do

I have the clause relating to this in my contracts (in fact all permissions are within the contract so I do not have to have any separate permission slips). My wording says "emergency advice and treatment". This clearly was OK for the recent inspection as no issue was raised and infact when I asked about it, the inspector stated that the document does not need to be taken out of the house as long as it is fully completed and on file.

Certainly a tough response from the inspector though, for the minder that called you.

I took my wording from the NCMA accident book a couple of years ago and it states "advice" so am ok but thanks for the prompt Sarah.

That's ridiculous if that was the only reason for marking her inadequate
for keeping children safe.....if there were no other reasons then she should appeal.........I certainly would.
It's just words........ ."help / advice /assistance"......what does it matter as long as you get it !

Mine is now changed too - it said "assistance and/or treatment now it says advice and/or treatment - and now that will really change my practice - I wonder if I should add assistance too because "assistance could mean physical assistance from your assistant, other minder, a family memeber, or passer by and could also cover telephone assistance from the likes of the ambulance service or NHS direct, whereas advice will only cover the latter two.

I think I'm off back to put it back in - blinkin ink - you just can't win in this job!!

Right, can somebody clarify for me please?
I have permission 'to seek emergency medical assistance, treatment or advice' signed on contracts (MM contracts)
I then have little cards which i carry with me, with emergency contact details for each child and myself.
Is it enough to have the above statement written on the cards? Or do the parents have to actually sign the card as well as having signed the contract?

    the specific legal requirements say...

Providers must obtain necessary information from parents in advance of a child being admitted to the provision, including:

Written parental permission must be requested, at the time of the child’s admission to the provision, to the seeking of any necessary emergency medical advice or treatment in the future.

Her paperwork did not meet the statutory requirements so the judgement is fair enough really.

Just a bit harsh at her first inspection.
