Observation permission

Hi guys,
I have recently started my level 3 diploma. To my surprise whilst doing a unit about observations I have read in a few guidance books that we should have permission from parents to observe their child. I have not heard or read of this since I became a childminder a year ago. I wondered if anyone had a template they wouldn't mind sharing with me. Thanks

To observe a child other than one in your own care, for study purposes is a scenario where people tend to get permission- for example someone studying a Level 3 or other diploma etc goes into a childcare setting (nursery etc) to observe a child/children and use the Obs as part of their study.

To observe children in our own care- well, we can not stop literally 'observing' then as we look at them all day! You can ask for permission to take photos, you can explain your obligations as far as the EYFS goes.

Mine says

I/we give permission for the childminder to carry out observations, assessment and planning as per the EYFS requirements. This will include the ‘Progress check at age two’. Observations may be recorded in writing, by photographs, video or audio recordings.

I do not ask parents for permission to do things that are required by the Eyfs such as carrying out observations - or things I might have to do in my work such as administer first aid - because then if parents said no I wouldn't be able to care for their child!

I inform them that I am doing it and ask for their comments ...

Of course if it's observations including a child's name and other details for a course then yes, we need to ask them for permission
