    Default What Font to use?????

    Hi
I have a lo who has just started attending school nursery in the afternoons when i take him we have to find his peg then go and find his name for self registration, he hides behind me at this point as he is sooo shy and doesnt recognise his name so i thought i would print off his name at home and dot them around the place so he can begin to recognise it but the only problem is i really dont know what font to use!!!???? is there a universal font that school uses????

Ask the play school what font they use and use the same as them.

It's probably a font like helvetica/arial... if more rounded and kid friendly could be comic sans. San serif and easy to read.

In my experience lots of schools and nurseries use comic sans because letters like 'a' are as we would write them not like most other computer fonts. If that makes sense. If that doesn't make sense just type the alphabet into word in a standard font and then re type it in comic sans and compare all the letters and see how they are much more like how we teach children to write.

Tidy hand is nice... so is Comic Sans for most jobs - but the numbers are not schoolbook shapes.

When you are writing a number '1' you are usually better using a lower case 'l' so it doesn't have the flick at the top.

I think the '1' is ok in Gill Sans if I remember... it's been a while since I did typography - well 18 years or so

Number '4' is tricky - this font has the right shape and is good for children who enjoy tracing - http://www.fontspace.com/christopher-jarman/jardotty. If you are making a number line you can join the dots before laminating.

The ideal font for letter formation - made especially for the job - is Sassoon Primary if you can find a version of that which is free. However the '1' and '4' shapes are again not great for using with small children.

Remember if you use 'unusual' fonts on a website other people might not be able to read them - so always stick to the standard ones.
