do you use gloves to change bums!!

hi,
just wanted to see how many of you use gloves to change bums?
is it a MUST to use them or can we choose?
cant rem what they siad on the course. i know we did in the nursery but is it really a must on one child!
any feed back please x x

no I don't as a rule - find them too awkward. I have some and if its a particuarly bad one then yes I would.

I use gloves if there is copious amount of bodily fluid

If Ofsted are asking then yes I wear gloves.

If you are asking, then generally no, only if its dirty.

Me too. The nappies I changed today were gloves on, no question yuk

I use gloves more now than I used to as I just could not get on with them. Now I only use one as the other hand just holds clothes/legs out of the way. The 'working hand' I put a glove on

Yes, I always use gloves, always have, they live in the changing basket with the nappies. I suppose it is just habit now.

I have never used agloves to change bums and have even done it when inspectors are here, social services etc. Its way too fiddly. So long as you clean your hands thoroughly after changes its fine. I always wipe my hands with a wet wipe which goes in the nappy sack and then wash my hands with soap and water too. Ofsted are looking at ways you manage health and safety not laying down exact requirements.

I know unfortunately some inspectors have been shown to be picky but its not written that gloves HAVE to be used. If i had a skin condition such as exzema (sp?) then i would use gloves.

I have had a child with worms a long time ago and thank goodness I was wearing gloves is all can say!!!!

I never used to but have to say that I do now.

I used to consider it way too fiddly but then I took on a child who's poo was always runny and I got sick to death of cleaning it out of my finger nails YUK

So I started to wear them but only on one hand (ie the one that does the mopping up!) and find it so much better and to be honest it has now become part of the routine!

I wear one glove on the hand dealing with the mess or two gloves if its a big mess like mega poop puke or blood.

Same as a few of the others, only on one hand that's actually doing the cleaning up!

Habit now, that I just run out & hated doing it without today!

sorry just cana get use to wearing gloves and i know they are small and tight fiting but i till can't find any small enoug for my little hands lol

dont like then so i just wash up after and if a nappy is that bad i use the shower

I always wear gloves, years of working in a hospital, if I can change a nappy of a baby weighing under 2 lbs wearing gloves a toddler is a doddle!! Hate to think of getting poo on my hands

I don't because the first time I changed my mindees nappy with them on she freaked.

She had a dirty bum whilst Ofsted were here and I explained that I didn't use gloves because of the above reason and she said that as long as I washed my hands before and afterwards and was sensible about hygiene then I didn't need to use gloves.

I asked my CCO this tuesday and she said to definately wear them.
she even said to have disposable aprons in the house in case of a really bad nappy (or in case another CCO does my inspection...there seem to be some discussions going on about demanding disposable aprons for each nappy change) some CCO mark you down if you don't others seem more reasonable if you can show good hygiene anyways.

(at the induction training we were told where the apron thing came from:
here it goes: a cm changed a babies bottom while the inspection took place and she did that with the baby on her lap - how you do this is unknown to me - anyhow, she got poo on her trousers, but never got changed and went on to make the kids lunch. Inspector saw it and seemingly since then we are supposed to not only wear gloves but also aprons.)

I'd much rather wash my hands, but I think I will definately wear the gloves to make it a habit...

I think if OFSTED are with you I would wear them just in case you get a fussy inspector

I dont normally wear gloves unless its a very yukky poo.
And if you dont wear gloves keep your nails short

Personally I always wear gloves for a dirty nappy, but do not always wear one for a wet nappy.

I have to be honest and say I find it hard to understand why people do things when Ofsted are there and not at other times, surely it's a health and hygiene issue. If you think that you do not need to wear gloves then stand up to Ofsted and say so, if you think you should but can't be bothered, maybe you should!

Sorry don't want to offend, but I can honestly hold my hands up and say I did not change anything when Ofsted recently visited, I wanted them to have a true reflection of what it is like in my house.

I think it is best practice or maybe it's because I worked as a nursery nurse for many years before childminding!
