Transportation Theme. Any Ideas for PSED?

Hi
I've just got the one little boy at the moment and have decided to do a whole month of theme planning based around what he absolutely loves....transportation.
I have split it down into four weeks one for each of the below areas but I'm really having trouble thinking of anything to cover the PSED area of learning.

Air
Water
Road
Rail

Any ideas would be great.

How about:-

Trips out on one or more forms of transport - ie bus / train

Asking a fellow childminder (or friend with child) to join you either for activities at yours or a shared trip out (opportunities for sharing, playing games with another child, working together / alongside and so on)

Going to library to get books to go with theme

Using 'teddy' to link with home - ie going in car to childs house - going out at weekends - and when in setting Teddy can (if child interested)) take part in role play card board box car / boat/ whatever.

I would not worry about pre planning areas of learning (I don't do it at all) chances are things will not go to plan - so just see what happens and where child takes ideas

Personally I think you will find that will cover lots of areas of PSED - the more important question is - are there any specific areas that you want to help child develop / achieve? If so work on these - possibly just as part of routines rather than theme activities - remember that you include everything child does - not just the planned ones!

Some ideas here for all areas hope they help



Communication, Language and Literacy

• Observe different forms of transport on your way to school. Talk

about the different sounds they make.

• At home pretend that you are on a bus and sing “ the wheels on the bus

• Read the story of Paddington Bear and if possible visit a train station

Station. Look out for the Souvenir Shop.

• Find some books about the fire brigade, ambulance services,

and police. You could go to the library and/or a book shop. Talk

about how important these services are.

Mathematical Development

• Outside, count how many cars, buses and lorries you can see in 5

minutes.

• On a train journey count how many seats in your carriage.

• What number is your seat?

• What shape is the window?

• Play with different containers in the water tray or in the bath.

• Pretend you are going on an aeroplane.

• Stride out how wide you think the wings are.

• Use square, triangle, circle and rectangle shapes to make a

vehicle.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

• Play on a road map. Talk about what vehicles and buildings you

need on it.

• Discuss road safety when out walking and car safety when in the

car.

• In the water tray use boats or tubs and put e.g. Lego people in it.

Pretend you are going on holiday. Talk about where you can go

on a boat.

• Play with friends or family at being rescued by the fire brigade and

being taken in an ambulance to hospital.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

• Take a trip on a bus or train. Make observations from the

windows.

• Talk about fast and slow. What travels on rails and what travels on

roads.

• What travels in the air? Look out for hot air balloons. Find pictures

of rockets travelling to the moon.

• Look at a globe and find where you live. Look for other places that

you have visited. How do you get there?

Physical Development

• Learn to ride a tricycle or a scooter.

• If you have a ride-on car pretend you are going on a journey.

Listen to instructions like go, stop, slow, fast.

• Cut out some streamers to put on a tricycle. How can you make

them fly?

• Reinforce stop, look and listen when out for a walk.

Creative Development

• Make model boats, cars or trains using boxes and tubes, cutting

and sticking carefully.

• Make a kite to fly in the wind.

• Make some paper aeroplane

Hi

Just thinking outside the box but to make it relevant to personal, social and emotional development why don't you involve the families and ask them to write a letter with their child and get them to post it to you, you could then write a reply to their letter once you have recieved it! This would encourage talking about his/her family likes dislikes special occasions etc, you can also talk about the journey of a letter and what happens when it is posted where it goes before it is delivered etc...

Like I said just thinking outside the box!
