Re: Multicultural festival calendar 2009 at a glance
I have just been on a diversity course and it was brought up there that we are so caught up with other cultures and festivals that we are losing our own. The lady running the course was Sikh and she said we should embrace our own beliefs.
As a result, all of us who attended have decided to include our own culture and festivals in our planning so - good old St Patrick, St David, St George and St Andrew and hello to our own special days - pancake day, lent, Passion Sunday, Easter - the list goes on. Lots of opportunity for learning - maps, flowers, emblems, flags.
I know I am going on but one pre-school I know of was not allowed to call Christmas "Christmas" and had to call it The Holidays so they didn't upset children who were not Christian. Well, I'm sorry but . . .

Absolutely right!
Sounds like you had a trainer who knows what she is talking about.
At my local children's centre when it was new, they forgot to order any white dolls, they were so concerned about getting a racial mix.
Thank you for reminding everyone

I'm looking for a 2013 calendar of multicultural dates and celebrations. Has anyone got one they can recommend?

there is one on the ****** website. you have to scroll through month by month but it has loads on it.
Also activity village has one, again month by mnth, but it has activity ideas and background info on the festivals etc I have found quite useful for my long term planning
