I am finally getting a new phone in the next couple of days (hurrah!), which is a newfangled Smartphone (Android).

Are there any really good/useful apps that I should put on it?

I use babyconnect with one of my parents.

We love it. I fill it in during the day, add photos sometimes. Mum loves it as she can see what baby is up to.

I've recently got a new android phoen too am getting used to it. So this will sound like a silly question -- how can mum see what you've filled in then? How does it work?

Mum has the app on her phone as well and the app will sync between us so if I fill stuff in Mum can see it and vice versa. You can have more than one child on it too.

Under settings there is a place to register a child.

You type in the child's name and an email address of another user, beside yourself, who can view and post entries for that child.
