Yes, you need to tell insurer you are a childminder- it should not be a big deal, it doesn't effect the price much. I always do my insurance set-up on the phone so I can speak to a real person to confirm they have me recorded as being a childminder and that it is written on my insurance document.

I personally always go for one of the specialist childminder insurers. I suspect they might be a bit more expensive, but at least I know that I have the correct insurance. I also pay extra to have a seven seater car courtesy car.
I do get quotes from both each year, and there is often some movement in the price.
