    Default Working Xmas Day?

Have any of you been asked to work on Xmas Day or Boxing Day and would you work it? If so what would you charge?

My new parent works for a carehome which is open and she has been asked to work Xmas Day and Boxing Day. Shes asked me to have her little one both these days as her family dont take anything to do with her and shes a single parent.

Part of me says NO WAY but the other part feels sorry for her little one missing out on her First Xmas .

    HELP!

I wouldn't work Christmas Day. It'd mess with my sherry and cornflakes tradition too much

I would definatly consider the situation. I use to work in catering and hospitality and so working bank holidays, the entire Christmas period and New Years eve was expected, there were no excuses. I use to have to leave DS1 with DF to go to all the family things together, usually at my parents house and meet them all afterwards. If the mindees had no other family to go to, I would have them, but if there was family around I would try to get the parents to send them there. I would not charge any extra either, as I never got paid any extra for working the damn days myself! Obviously this would be different if I knew the parents were getting double time or something.

It is the season for giving and all that!

I would consider it especially as Jayden is so young at the minute and doesnt understand christmas anyway. Explain to the parent that it wont be like a proper working day and they're wont be activities etc.

I would charge more aswell most care homes pay extra for these days i think i would be asking for double time christmas day and time n half for boxing day as this is what care homes normally pay

I would if asked as I used to work in a pub years ago and often worked xmas day. I would charge more though as most people do get at least double time, we used to get triple in the pub. Those were the days getting paid to get drunk

Mind you as Miss Mopple said it would interfer with the sherry tradition, we have that one to,forget the cornflakes though

i think it depends a lot on what xmas means to you - for me its not much, i only spend it with dh who is a scrooge and my son at 20 months is still too young to really understand xmas - if my kids were older then there is no way i'd do it as i would have to give them the respect to say its family time.

If i did do it i'd definately charge a lot more than normal rate - perhaps 2.5x!

I might very well work it, yes, it depends - I'd charge double my usual rate. And if Christmas was at my home of course that day.

    No no no no no..........

I only drink champagne on Christmas day and I'd be all resentful that I couldn't have my traditional after lunch snooze

if this lo will "slot" into your familt day with little or no hassle, I would.

I have had others here for Chritsmas and it can alter the equilibrium,
like has been said I suppose it depends on how important THE day is to you and yours.

Here it's no diff to any other day. It s a day when we eat dinner at lunchtime and it's all for the kids.

Let us know what you decide

No way. I worked for the NHS for 20 years and have done my fair share of working Christmas. One of the benefits of minding is that I don't have to work Christmas. It is such a special time with my own family.

There's also the mulled wine with your mince pie at visitors houses, the glass of wine or two while cooking dinner, the champagne with the meal, the sherry trifle and the brandy butter with the christmas pud. Then the after dinner liqueor Do you think I have a problem?

I don't know if I would or not.

Depends on the mindee, if they were like one of the family and no trouble then I don't see why not if my hubby and son didn't mind.

I would definitely charge double though as it's a very big ask and the mindee would just have to go along with what we had planned as a family.
