Both!
Full timers (more than 10 hours a week) have a folder with the eyfs ages and stages and lots of anecdotes, comments, notes from other settings / parents, photographs, observations, assessments and next steps, individual planning ... all linked to Eyfs...
Part timers (less than 10 hours a week) get a scrap book with photos, notes and comments, individual planning ...again linked to Eyfs.
I use a scrap book, just covered the outside and put on a picture and looks quite nice.
I use loose leaf files. Add poly pockets as needed. Obs, assessments, next steps, photos, notes from other settings etc. All EYFS stuff.
Slim files for less than 10 hours a week. Big fat ones for over 10 hours - more to write about !
Mine are in a folder, a ring binder sort with loose pockets that i can keep adding too. Then hopefuly i will only have one for each child. Sue x
I have started a folder
I use poly pockets that way you can keep adding...and adding..........etc
I'm the same and when the child leaves I plan to make a pretty decorated cover from thick card and put all the 'pages' between it, fastening them with treasury tags.
That way I can keep the file to be used again and the child will have a personal reminder of their time here.

I've bought a spiral binder so I'm going to bind mine in the end or even start it that way as I can take out pieces of paper and add to them as necessary

I use a loose leaf A4 folder for individual LJ's and I do an overall "together scrap book"
i keep a scrapbook, in which i stick photos/scribbled notes/drawings etc, plus formal observations. each have 'next steps' written next to them. i also have a brief short/medium/long term plan for each child, also stuck in! the quantity of stuff in their scrapbooks depends upon how often i see the child!
i decided the scrapbooks are easier to store/work in.
i do a daily diary for each child in a folder, and this comes and goes with the child each day (includes photos, drawings etc! just no EYFS comments!)
i'm going to need a new cupboard soon to store all this in! running out of room!

Think I will do a file for me to keep of all the children playing and learning together to keep after children move on. If not when they take their files I will be left with nothing to look back on.
iv looked in to the scrap books. My son bought one home from school looked nice... So decided to use them. I bought some from a raymans cost 75p a4 ones covers are different colours
I didn't know which to go for either. So I have done a folder for one child, scrap books for before & after schoolers and a A4 spiral bound, lined book for another child.
I shall stick to the scrap book for afterschoolers as this has worked well. I definately prefer to use the ring binder is it much easier to keep up-to-date. I ended up having to stick so much into the note book and you cant slot things in afterwards very well.
I like Pauline's idea of sandwhiching all the work between decorated covers and securing with treasure tags - I might do this when the folders are full - hope Pauline doesnt mind.

I've heard that they don't like the term 'scrap book',

I use a ring binder with a section for each area of learning in and stick relevant obs, photos, bits of work etc in the different sections.
I have a scrap book to show parents and ofsted with photos and links, just to give an idea of what i do, then each child has a ring binder folder- empty still as still all just a pile of paper that needs sorting
Marie.
this is a silly question but im just wondering, if i do a folder with the 6 areas in, what can i put in the front of each section? would i put the early learning goals that children should meet by the end of eyfs or something else im very confused

I was using both - now I am just using the folder. But i use scrapbooks for over children who are not under the EYFS/ x
