Just read this thread but I'm unable to see the link to the post explaining why we may not want to use the site. Can anyone enlighten me?!! Really intrigued...

I think it is all right to use now. It has been cleaned up and I think is run by different people now.

I cant access the link either but I remember reading something about it being to do with the creator of the sparklebox site being jailed for making indecent images of children...he is also a convicted paedophile

Oh OK that was not what I had been lead to believe but I admit I haven't used it or checked it out for a while.

IIRC, I read that the original owner (the one with the convictions) had transferred ownership to a member of his family. I guess you have to make you own decision one way or the other as to what level of separation now exists there. Also the site has removed the interactive elements which caused a lot of people the greatest concern: message board/blog, in an attempt to show there would be no possibility of adult-child contact through the site.

It is difficult to find accurate information because:

• people can and do put false information on the net all the time
• you need to be careful putting up anything that the current company might regard as defamatory

We were recommended by the county not to use Sparklebox, but I understand the County then retracted under advice from their own legal department.

What really makes me cross is the number of schools and other settings who continued to use the resources (thus supporting the website/company) but instructed their staff to cut off all printed references to Sparklebox, 'cos they didn't wish to be seen to be associating themselves with the site. Sure, have it both ways, and teach the lo's it's ok to breach IPR law at the same time.

Personally, I think there are plenty of other good sites out there if you have the slightest doubts about Sparklebox.
