Let them make their splodges - you can cut them to almost any shape afterwards with a bit of imagination!

I cut the shapes out first, its less messy. less to hang up to dry than big sheets of dripping paint.

depends on the age and what it is for. If it is for a display adn a little one is painting it I cut out first as you can guarantee the little darling will paint everywhere but where you want or all over so you can't see the lines to cut out

I usually cut them out first too because it doesn't take up so much space to dry

I cut them out to but before painting try to teach the children what they are painted if doing numbers cut out one to five then have a counting game before painting.

What about making large number stencils and then laying them over a sheet of paper and getting them to sponge paint over so when you take the stencil of you have perfect numbers underneath with a nice effect?

The numberjacks site has some large numbers to colour in they may be able to be used to make the stencils?
