I just use washed yellow builders sand from Builders Merchants - only costs about £3 to fill up sand pit - makes far better sandcastles as it isn't as fine sand, doesn't blow around and end up in eyes on a windy day and doesn't stress me out when they tip it down cracks in patio and sprinkle over rest of garden!

I didn't think we were supposed to use builders sand because it can still have sharp bits in it and it can stain the children.

Or is that one of the health and safety myths that went round

The Beach is made up of crushed up rocks and shells - I don't find it stains the children at all - I think it is washed builders sand that I use. Hubby is manager of Builders Merchants so he just brings it home for me. And I'm sure that the open sand pits they have in parks aren't filled with play sand - not that I let my mindees play in them anyway - probably full of broken glass, needles, dog, cat & fox poo!
