Default I am the dopey one...

Tax all sorted a while ago ready to submit and all.... Sat down to do it tonight, all paperwork to hand and realised I didn't apply for new activation code. Meant to but my degree took over this month. Why did I not submit a month ago when I completed my accounts..... So a fine for me..... Grrrrrrr

Did you apply for the activation code? There is a chance it will arrive by Thursday, and due to industrial action HMRC will not apply the penalty this year until after 2 Feb.

Ah now I did this last year and sent them an email asking for an activation code (on 29th Jan). By the time code arrived in post it was 13th Feb before I was able to submit my accounts, and I was fully expecting a fine, however nothing, naadaa, nought. Now that could have been because I didn't have any tax to pay, or could have been because they were being extremely nice.

Yes, that was the way it worked last year (and for the previous 150 years): unfortunately they have changed the rules this year, and you get a fine if you are late with the return EVEN IF THEY OWE YOU MONEY!!!!

You don't get a new code - log in and submit under last years code

Not sure what you are saying emile, you only need to activate your account using an activation code once: if you did this last year, you only need to log in using your user id and password. If you can log in, you can submit your return.

Dont be silly JulieA - HMRC are NEVER nice!!! LOL

Seriously though, last year they didnt charge fines if you had no tax to pay but this year the rules have changed.
