    Default always confused

Ive been doing my own tax for 3yrs now and everytime I do it Im still confused as to why its so high.

This yr I have earned £16,108 and my expenses were £5649
Tax/NI owed is £1764 (£500 of this is on account, which I ****** hate doing)
My personal allowance is £6475 so I'm only paying tax on around 4k and its so much

is this right or am I not understanding this properly........
    Im working it out as £16,108 minus £5649(expenses) minus £6475(allowance) = £3985

    HELP

Are you sure you are claiming everything you can. Have a look at the expenses in downloads and see if you are missing something.

Your £3985 is taxable and not the tax so total to be paid would be approx £1000 for tax and ni so you would also have to pay on account again for next year (what you have already paid on account will come off of this)
