Paying National Insurance?

Afternoon all

Just wondering how i go about paying my National Insurance? It is my first month childminding and I am trying to get my head around it all and finding it rather confusing.

Am hoping to plan for another baby of my own at some point towards the end of next year so am I right in thinking that I will only get maternity allowance if I have been paying my National Insuance? I have had a 6 month gap between finishing my last office job to starting childminding - will this need to be topped up?

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be really grateful

you register as self employed online or phone up they then set up direct debits....took a few weeks for mine to come through.
