Sorry, you can't claim for walking unfortunately. Fantastic idea though!

You can claim 40p for the first 10,000 business miles in your car or van. If you ever drive more than 10,000 business miles in one tax year, you can only claim 25p per mile thereafter.

24p per mile for motorcycles and 20p per mile for cycles.

Also there is a 5p allowance for carrying passengers. However this doesn't apply to mindees unfortunately. The pdf I read refers to employees, so it might only apply to assistants and perhaps not to colleagues you might take to training, conferences, business shopping etc.

Hmm, me thinks this is an urban myth! Are you sure about the push bike? how would you get your mindees on it? Will check this out.

Basically, whatever you claim for you have to be able to justify to the inland revenue that it is wholly for the use of your business. Some things you can claim part allowance for. Maybe 1 trainer instead of 2? Ha, ha.

Remember that they are always targetting different employment groups - eg. ebay traders, builders, childminders. If you get a letter saying they are doing an investigation (which they do randomly and those they have concerns about), you will be expected to produce up to 6 years worth of receipts and accounts. I ahve been told it is hell. So, would err on the side of caution!

I am positive about the pushbike. The tax inspector was stood in front of me and said .20p for my pushbike plus .20p for every bike used that I own.

I was told that it had to have a logo on too as you could say that "these trainers" are just for childminding and they wouldn't be claimable?

You can't claim for walking, There is an information leaflet online from the Inland Revenue. It explains exactly what you can and cannot claim.

Childminders already have very generous consessions with hmrc but if we claim for ridiculous things like walking then we will spoil the agreement that we have and could in the future lose what we can claim for and also be targeted for inspections.
My husband has worked for hmrc for 20 years and has not targeted a childminder yet!!!!

That's interesting Debbie. Thanks. Makes the use of a car seem very expensive. If you have bikes, they are basically paying us then!

I think it depends on the ages of the children. My car has 8 occupants in the morning and getting them all to school on bikes would be a bit too hard. This is why I claim capital gains and % but that works for me.

You don't have to be transporting a minded child to claim. Childminders might claim for using a pushbike when going to a local training course, visiting a parent, delivering invoices etc, putting up posters & adverts...

claiming for walking, that would be great with the amount of walking i do, but im guessing like other people that someones pulling your leg.

I did think you might be able to put shoes on your expenses though?
If you had dedicated walking shoes while childminding??

DebbieS is very good on the topics of book keeping and regularly updates us with what the HMRC will/wont allow us so whatever debbie says I take as red.
