Claiming for a new porch
Hoping someone can help here, I built a porch onto the front of my house as there wasnt room for all the childrens coats and shoes in my hall...( I look after 15 children with 2 assistants) I wouldnt have done this had I not been a childminder, can I claim this as an expense when I do my tax return?

You have 15 children each day? Does your public liability insurance cover that? I thought the limit was 12? But to answer your question, not really sure.

No as it's an home improvement. You can claim for furniture etc inside but not the actual building and labour
When someone tells you nothing is impossible, tell them to go slam a revolving door

No, you can not claim for building work. This is an old thread but still valid, I believe:

Call HMRC if you are needing confirmation, or get an accountant's advice.

No the only things you can claim for would be if you had to put in a ramp or adapt your downstairs cloakroom to make your home more wheelchair friendly. My husband built an undercover play area attached to back of my house but I can't claim as it's a permanent structure - seems daft that I could buy a new gazebo to be wrecked in the wind each week but not a proper structure. Hopefully you will have added some value to your house when you come to sell it by adding on a porch.
