Hello. I had pre reg today. It went Ok, although I can't use my garden :( I hadn't realised that I had some poisonous plants/weeds and also said my fence wasn't secure enough and some other bits that needed to be removed (had planned to spend a few more hours on it anyway, but has been rainy etc.

Although I don't have any actions, which is great, and I can register garden at a later date.

The inspector was here for nearly 3 hours! She was friendly, but very strict, and even pointed out that my skirting board needed a clean  and its not flithy or anything. She asked some very ackward questions but I got through them.

Basically, what do I do now? I know I have to wait for hubbys CRB, my reference checks and my heath form. She said she guessed about 4-10weeks. But what do I do now, when do i need to register as self emplyed? When do I need to take out insurance etc?

well done!

you have to register with the tax office as being self employed within 3 months of becoming registered.

You don't have to apply for your insurance/ncma membership until you have received your certificate and are ready to mind. I received my registration on a Monday and started minding on the Wednesday I was issued with a cover note by the insurance company.

you have to register with the tax office within 3 months of starting work.

Dont get your insurance until you know your start date for work otherwise you could end up wasting a few weeks/months of money if you dont get mindees straight away

Great, thanks for the replies. So will my insurance cover me immediately? As I would like to start minding asap and wouldnt want insurance to hold me back. I know a parent who got let down by her childminder as the insurance didnt come through on time or something?

Also, meant to ask. She said I had have 3 children, plus my LO who is 5 months. So 2 under 5, over 1 and then 1 over 5. Where do I stand with over 8s? Are they included in these numbers?

over 8`s are different you are not restricted under ofsted for numbers with them, but your insurance will only cover i think, 12 children in total (i think its 12 maybe 15) insurance is immediate effect, but i was waiting or my registration for longer than anything else. good luck xxxx

Firstly well done!
Your inspector seemed very strict and picky, especially for a pre-reg.

As for over 8's you are allowed as many as you want as long as it is a reasonable amount and they don't affect the care of the under 8's.

Are you getting the NCMA toolkit as part of your start up grant? If so get the application form sent off as soon as possible for the kit as it comes with insurance - this takes a good 4 - 6 weeks to sort out.

If not I would recommend enquiring about the insurance through NCMA and asking them when it would be best to apply for their insurance so that you are ready for when your registration cert comes through.

My insurance came through way too early, it was beginning of March and I didn't get my first mindee till mid May. But I am not too fussed about 1 months worth of wasted insurance.

Well done on getting through it. Cant believe they are so picky as to pick you up on your skirting boards  Its a shame about your garden but to be honest I think I will probably have the same problem with mine when the time comes. So was it the weeds themselves they objected to or just the type of weed? Our backgarden has so many flowerbeds which were there when we moved in and over the last couple of years i have found it near impossible to keep on top of it. Hence the fact that my garden is full of them!

Anyway congratulations for getting through it all

Thank you for all the replies.

It wasn't just the fact I had weeds, it was a particular plant that was harmful, but as I havent got a clue about plants, I just thought it was a standard weed.

I am not too worried about my garden, I have a park within 5min walk, and its a nice walk, past the farmers field with horses etc. And I wont be minding till september ish so wont be long till the weather gets bad and then I can have it sorted by next summer hopefully.
