My first inspection was nearly five years ago!!! They eventually rang last summer, but because I had no children in the early years group, they said I didn't need to be inspected and to ring them when I have.
Well, still havent got any, but HAVE got nine schoolies from year one up to year five!!!! They don't all come at the same time, but sometimes there are seven of them here at once!
Anyway, got a message yesterday from Ofsted asking me to call back as he needs to come and inspect me 'regardless of whether I have any children or not on roll at the moment'......so, I am assuming I will ring back and he will be here next week some time.
My question is: How on earth am I going to prove myself when I don't have any EYFS children on roll? I don't do any obs or planning or next steps because I don't need to. I obviously do all that in my head for the older ones, for instance I 'observed' that 9 year old B likes arty crafty stuff, so I introduce her to more and more elaborate crafts and now we are on cross stitch which she is loving...........but nothing written. But I do this sort of thing with all the kids I care for, I notice what they like, what they are good at, etc and plan for and challenge them.
I do a monthly newsletter, but I don't do learning journeys, because I don't need to do that either!!! Each child has a file which I add artwork and photos etc to each month and it goes with them when they finally leave, but the parents NEVER look at them or write comments! However, parents and me do talk in that old fashioned 'verbal' way every day almost!!! But again, no proof of that relationship at all!
Really struggling to think of how I can prove I am following the EYFS if I'm not!!!!

Have a look at the Childcare Register inspections document -
http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/conducting-childcare-register-inspections
Not sure how you will evidence Eyfs though if you've not got any Eyfs children.
maybe link what you do with the older children in your head to the requirements...
Good luck! :D

Thanks Sarah, just reading through it and came to this bit:
If there are no children on roll at the time of the telephone call, the inspection should not go ahead unless it was scheduled as the result of a complaint about non-compliance. In these cases the compliance, investigation and enforcement team will give advice about the next steps.
Which is worrying because in the message he said 'I need to come and inspect you, irrespective of whether you have children on roll or not'.
I know I DO have children on roll, but if the inspection is 'irrespective' of this, then does that means some one has made a complaint? What IS a complaint against non compliance? Is that just a fancy way of just saying 'complaint'?

I could be wrong, and I'm sure Sarah will know more but I'm pretty sure that your are being inspected as you haven't had one under the EYFS, especially as your last inspection was 5 years ago.
I think when they say about not going ahead if no children on roll they are maybe referring to someone that was last inspected 3 years ago, and then maybe they would try again in 6 months.
I would think that they need to inspect you as you might take on EYFS children tomorrow and nobody has been out to see you for 5 years so they have to come out and check premises, first aid etc and maybe your EYFS knowledge for when you do have an EYFS child.
It will state on your report that you had no children for the inspection.
And I'm pretty sure it would be nothing to do with a complaint, they would have just turned up or depending what it was discussed on phone.

I think Ofsted are just trying to get through everyone's inspections before this cycle ends (which I think is this July), don't think it will be anything to do with a complaint because then they would turn up unannounced.
As far as evidencing eyes, I think all you can do is explain what you would be doing if you had any children in eyfs.
Good luck

Well, I got hold of him today and he is coming out to inspect me on Friday NEXT week!!! All that manic cleaning I did at the weekend will have to be done again next weekend!
I am also having a 'no children on roll' inspection......which is soooo silly seeing as I actually have 9 on roll over the age of 6 yrs! And he wants to come when children are here, so I said if I'm being judged on no children on roll, then shouldnt there be NO children here???? And I can only get Satisfactory, which I dont mind really as thats what I was at my last inspection and it's done me no harm in the last five years! Just a shame that no matter how brilliant I shine at the inspection, it will make no difference whatsoever!
On a more positive note, he was really friendly and not at all ogre like! He also suggested that he come at 2pm so that we can talk in peace before the after school mania starts!
Just want it over with now!
Bit miffed about the 'no children on roll' cos he said that it will state in my report that 'at the time of the inspection the childminder had no children on roll'........:(

Shouldnt that say "no eyfs children on roll at time of the inspection" because to say "no children on roll" is not factual so can be questioned?
Could you do a brief mock LJ to show the inspector that you understand the eyfs and this is how you would do it if you got a preschool child. The inspector could not then put in the report that you do not understand the planning and next steps ect....
I hope it all goes well for you.

I've not had my first inspection yet as when they called in May I had no EYFS children. They phoned a few weeks ago but now I'm on maternity leave and not planning on working again until November. They said they need to come and see me regardless to make sure I meet all the requirements as everyone must be inspected by a certain date. She's not going to grade me but just put on my file if I've met the requirements. Maybe it's a similar thing for you? Hx
