Hi, I'm not sure where to ask this, hope this is the right place.
I have registered but am not minding yet.
I am about to have a new double glazed window put in, it is a large floor to ceiling window. The salesman said it would have toughened glass as standard in the bottom half but not at the top. Does anyone know if I need it in the top half too? I'd really rather not spend another £100 on top of the £700 it's going to cost already!

Thanks.

you can get a sticky transparent film to go other bit....

perhaps you need to check with Ofsted.... they will probably just suggest that you RA.....

If is is a continuous piece of glass then the whole window should be toughened glass and have a kite mark on it with a number and 'toughened glass' etched into the corner of the window.

Ofsted are likely to look for this and expect it to be noted in your RAs.

If it is a window that is divided with a proper top that is higher or as high as a normal window , the normal height window would not need the toughened glass in the same way that normal windows don't.

If it is a full window then I would pay the extra £100 to have the whole thing in toughened glass to be sure and put the extra £100 on your expenses because if you were not childminding you wouldn't have paid the extra. It seems a small price to pay for peace of mind.

I thought that by law suppliers had to use glass that would not shatter - as Rickysmiths says look for the kite mark.

I would do a bit of google aswell to get back ground

Thanks for the replies! :) Google wasn't as helpful as you guys!

It's a floor to ceiling window, but it is split halfway horizontally, with an opening window at each end of the top half (like a 'normal' height window), and the bottom half is made up of two panes of toughened glass. The middle top bit is probably just over a metre squared.

I realise a hundred pounds doesn't sound that much, but we really don't have it. We are only having the window done because the old one looks like it's about to fall out and is so old it's draughty. I'm worried about our heating bill :panic:

I'd rather not put that film on it, we'll pay the extra if we absolutely have to but if it's not a necessity then probably not.

I think ringing Ofsted is a good idea.

Ive just been inspected today and i have a door made of glass panels.ive only got safety film on to a hight of 110 cm,thats the bottom 3 rows of panels as this is building regulation hight for toughened glass, and this was fine by my inspector,if that helps.
