When I registered 4yrs ago I had all intentions of using upstairs for putting a cot in. I did use it for a while but because we are out and about a lot the little one usually fell aselep in the buggy.

Now, for the past year Ive only had 1 mindee who sleeps in the pushchair so upstairs has not been used. I dont intend on using it again either. I have a couple of new mindees starting and I was thinking of using the buggy which lies flat and a cot in the lounge if needed.

I am due an inspection anytime, will Ofsted look upstairs because its registered? Can I just explain that I dont use it anymore or will it need to be all risk assessed?
Its not been risk assessed up there for ages and stuff has moved about a lot so not ideal for children.

i think if you just explain that you no longer use upstairs for minding then ofsted won't look at it - but you will then get a comment on your certificate along the lines of 'can not use the upstairs of the house'. I did that with my garden when I first registered as it wasn't suitable for children to get to - when I had sorted it out I wrote to ofsted and had the condition removed explaining what i had done to make it safe for the children.

If it is currently registered the inspector does have the right to look so be prepared. :)

If you don't want to use it anymore ask for it to be taken off your registration certificate and then they probably won't bother looking.

We moved to a bungalow recently and didn't want the loft conversion registered, she didn't go up to look but it had to be excluded on my certificate.

You might also be asked how you will stop children having access to the upstairs.
