Hello there! I have not long started childminding and need some 'numbers' advice if anyone could help?

My own 2.5 year old little girl takes one of my early years places.

I also have a little boy on my books who is 4 and will start school in September (I currently drop and collect him from pre school 2 days a week). He will be 5 in November this year.

I have a baby starting 4 days a week in August who will be 13 months.

Today I have had an enquiry about having another baby 5 days a week from May, she will be 11 months.

Will this tip me over my allowed numbers? I have managed to completely confuse myself..! Any help would be greatly appreciated! :-)

Thank you, x

Yes, on the days you currently have 3 under 5, you will be unable to have the new baby too.

Once the 4 year old starts full time school in September he will move up to become in your over 5 numbers. So from September you will have another under 5 space assuming you have a 5 - 8 space for the 4 year old to move up into.

Hi :),
I'd normally agree with this, but I'm sure i've seen somewhere on the forum that Ofsted count children going into full time education in September as 'rising 5's' from the beginning of the summer holidays...

They got it in writing too, so if you could find that thread... you'd be ok.

If I've got that totally wrong :D !!, another possibility would be to take on the May mindee on a temporary contract till August, then apply for a variation for continuity of care just before the august LO is due to start, say Mum of May LO wants to extend the contract into august and beyond... I imagine that if August LO has already done some settling in sessions they would allow you to care for both so long as you don't go over your total numbers :).

Hope you find a solution

best wishes,
Wendy :)

Just during August youll be over numbers. Perhaps you could get a variation as it is a limited time - worth a try.

Agree with above- between the August baby starting and the 4 yr old starting school full time will be when you are over numbers

I agree with this.

Does the 4 yo come in the holidays? If not you might be OK otherwise ask for a variation to cover you for those few weeks

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies - I had heard of 'rising fives' so thanks for that explanation! I think as you say I am best to call Ofsted and see if they will allow an exception for August?! I can but try!

Many thanks, I really appreciate it. :-)
