Eventually had my first inspection today after a week of waiting for ms o to show up! She came at half twelve just as we got back from nursery and left at half 4 after I'd done school run. So exhausting!
Anyway, she said it was confidential until the report shows up in a couple of weeks but everyone else seems to say and I can't wait to tell you all!
She said I was doing a fantastic job and that I've at least got a good overall -with outstanding features! Though she said it might change slightly in that I might get more outstanding features and there's a chance my overall might be outstanding but she thinks it'll stay at good. She said that as I've only been minding for 4 months she doesn't feel she can really give me an outstanding overall but she needs to think about it a bit more!
I'm still in a state of nervous anxiety and haven't really taken it all in so am looking forward to reading the report!
Tips - ummm - my inspector said she was mostly interested in how I was with the children and observing their play/learning. She certainly did this and was very complimentary about it afterwards. However, she did seem very interested in the paperwork.
She spent about 10 mins talking to one of the mums and was really interested to know if she knew how to complain if necessary and also whether I was good at sharing information. She also wanted to know whether I shared my planning with her. The mum told her that she thought all the paperwork was a complete waste of time and she was much more interested to know that her son was happy and enjoyed his time here (that didn't go down well!).
She asked me about inclusion and how I represented diversity.
She really wanted to know about my vision for the future.
She loved the way I had things set out and actually said 'WOW' when we went up to the playroom! One of things I got outstanding for was to do with my resources i think. She was impressed that although I did lots of planning linked to the EYFS I was very child-led and went with how the kids were that day and what they were interested in. She liked the fact that the house is very child orientated and the children have easy access to resources.
She also liked the fact that although I had a sample menu I basically asked the children what they wanted to eat and was directed by them (easy for me to do as I have small numbers).
I had a few things planned for the day but ended up not doing any of them as the kids got involved in playing in the 'cafe' and I did my tiger that came to tea story-bag 3 times! (she loved that).
She said my files were really well organised and loved my policies and planning linked to the EYFS. and was really impressed with my working in partnership with the nursery (i'm lucky that they're really receptive to working with childminders).
She asked me about the signs to looks for in case a child was being abused.
She said that she could see that I loved being with the kids and working as a childminder and that really shone through. She felt I was doing a brilliant job and that I should feel very proud and pleased with myself. She said it was unheard of for her to give this grading for a first inspection.
Phew . . . think that's all! I'm really happy but ready for a glass of wine and a good night's sleep. Thanks to everyone for all their tips and help . . .
Last bit of advice - Sarah's SEF e-book was invaluable. Thanks Sarah!
