at the moment the girls are sitting on my sons car playmat when reading books.
So I wondered what you use as I am thinking of getting something that could be easily rolled up and put away when not in use.

How about a picnic rug, I always keep a couple of those with the plastic backing for indoor use.
Great for sitting on, making tents, wrapping up in, playing games on, indoor picnics etc etc.

I got a really nice mat from Argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1193947/Trail/searchtext%3ECHILDRENS+RUGS.htm
It was £12.99 and the kids love the texture of it. I also got some similar cushions in Primark for £7 each.

I have a couple of things - I have 4 small bath mats from Ikea which were £1.39 - that way the children get to sit on their own mat which they like and they double up as stepping stones - you can easily pop away too http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/70075638
I also have this rug in my daughters room, looks fab and tho its not too easy to roll up every day its a nice texture - they call it the grass rug :-)

Ikea also do some nice small kiddy rugs for a few quid.

I have bath mats from Ikea too but mine are round and primary colours.
They use them to sit on at snack time , to watch tv and to have stories.
I also group two or three together and put duplo or cars or small world stuff on.

I went the camping route - Lidl had the 2 tents, one wigwam and the other a round one with a connecting tunnel. I then put in 2 sleeping bags which the children open out flat on the floor or they snuggle into them and get the books out. I also have 2 ladybird mats on the playroom floor but they use these more for stepping on. I have also got the foam mats with the numbers in the centre which you can press out - unfortunately my younger ones think of these as something to chew on!! There is also the car mat but it is usually for the children to roll the cars on!
