Had the call last night at 5 o'clock to tell me she was coming today or Monday, I'm not due my inspection until July so my paperwork is not quite up to scratch and I need the weekend to sort it out. I'm going to take my one mindee to the local playbarn, the inspector said she would be here by 9.30 if she was coming but I don't plan on being in anyway, has anyone else purposely avoided their Ofsted inspector?

No I haven't done that.

I cancelled an inspection as my son was "ill"

Ment I missed out on a days pay but was worth the 2 extra weeks grace on the inspection!

No I haven't gone out but I did put them off as I was painting and she wanted to come the next day.

I arranged it for when it suited me :D

I was out when my inspector came, I didn't do it on purpose she must have written the details down wrong.

She just left a message on my house phone asking me to call her to rearrange, it was a really nice message too.

It's bad enough that i'm being inspected 6 months early as they are 'ahead of schedule' but to only be given 12 hours notice and then she might not even turn up today, can't even ring her as I don't have a number

You can ring Ofsted and they should be able to contact her.

It would be better to put her off than just be out - some inspectors might not take kindly to that and you will have to face her eventually.

I would have asked if she could delay it a few more days because I was really busy

When Ofsted called me I was honest - they can be understanding you know !!!

Not sure if your idea is a good idea and they will catch up with you in the end

I would at least call and say you will not be at home today

my paperwork might not be that bad but for my own peace of mind I would like more time to sort it, it's not fair that they can give you less than 24 hrs notice, I don't know another childminder who has has so little notice, evn the schools round here get more notice, one of my mindees mums is a teacher and her school got 3 days notice for their last inspection

I would have told the inspector that

I agree sometimes you do just need to get things in order and we are all guilty at some point of being behind with paper work etc

Dont think its fair to let her call though when she thinks you are going to be at home?

Not much notice is more common than you think - I had the call on a Tuesday afternoon and she came Wednesday morning as soon as I was back from the school run.

They don't HAVE to announce the visits and anyone can have a surprise visit from an inspector anyway, hence the saying work every day as if you are going to be inspected that day.

I think it'd be a very bad idea to just not be in as you know they are coming, it'll look awful. Ring and say you are ill/los are ill and not coming, anything.

None of us feel ready for inspections and would all like more time to get everything as we want it, just not possible.

at least you are getting 12 hours notice what about all those who have had unanounced visits.

when i had an unanounced visit, i opened the door to the inspector asking why she was here as i was not due an inspection, apparently the last inspector was running late with her insepctons and she was cathching up with them, so basically i had my inspections 9 months apart.

I sorted it, rang and cancelled, she was fine about it so now I can sort out my paperwork, I don't think she was coming today as she said she was going to ring me and ask me to get the parents to write a few comments and had she turned up today I wouldn't have had time to ask them.

Glad you got it sotred. On my first inspection I was called on the Tues pm, and told she was coming the following day at 10am!

I was talking to a friend the other day, and said in all honesty I think it would be fairer to all cm & parents, if all ofsted visits we unannounced!

How many cm (myself included  ) let things slip, and then make it all 'how they want to see it' on the day they come...

I do this, because I know I'm going to get some kind of warning, so sometimes my paperwork does fall slightly behind etc...

On the other hand, I know awful cm's who change their ways loads on an inspection, after reading some reports...

It would be a truer reflection of all if they just turned up!

Believe it or not I do agree with you to a certain extent, what I am annoyed about though is the fact that my inspection is not due for another 6 months, why tell you 3 years and inspect after 2 1/2. I wouldn't mind if I was due and it's not like it's only 6 weeks early. I know my practice is good but I know I would not be happy showing my paperwork to an inspector the way it stands, this way I can make sure I am happy with it, not gonna make any changes just add in some more photos and pieces of childrens work into my learning journals, also annoyed as I haven't done my SEF as we are currently going through it at our network meetings

Louise, my first inspection isn't due until middle of March but I've had the call and they're coming next week or the week after. My Dad has just been admitted to a hospice an hours drive away from me and is dying. He's been in hospital since before christmas so i've been working and then going to see him every other day after work. I also have a new little one who has only been with me for 3 weeks so I asked if they could delay my inspection as my paperwork isn't up to date. They said NO!!:panic:

I also had a call around 2pm on the Thursday and they turned up the next morning. She said either tomorrow or next week, I said I had a play date arranged at a play barn (I did) but she said, TBH I would leave it, as it is 1 day in 3 ish years ;)

I did panic, she was about 3 months early, but I try to live every day as if they could turn up!!! I think everyone should, I am not saying I am great lol I have loads to do, and still haven't done my SEF:blush: But hey hoo, lucky you getting it delayed!

We were also told that when EYFS started in Sep 2008 that the inspection process started back at 0 - so even if you had been inspected under the old system in say May, you could still be inspected under the EYFS in say October. In fact the nursery my twins attend was inspected March 2008 and then again under the EYFS in December 2008.

I'm quite looking forward to being given some notice at last! I've worked in nursery and after school for the last 6 years and am used to going to work and being greeted by an inspector.

I have just been inspected 7 months early ( the less said about that the better), my friend was 9months early - apparently in certain areas they are being very efficient and are running early - so be warned everyone. I had two days notice.

This is odd, cos I actually rang Ofsted as I was concerned I wouldn't have an EYFS child if they inspected me after Aug 31st this year! They said I was last inspected in June 2007, so I will be contacted close to June this year as the inspections are done every three years.

I also heard that the 'three year rule' was no longer the case now!

I am due in September but am a bit worried if they are turning up a lot earlier. Better get my paperwork up to date. Did they give a reason why they were so many months ahead of schedule?

no didn't give a reason just said they were ahead of schedule, I have a feeling that since they are self-employed maybe my inspector was feeling the squeeze after christmas and needed the money:laughing:
